Ramadan 2024 – Sudan’s Looming Fear As Ramadan Is Near

A Nosedive Jump

Since the first weeks of the war in Sudan that started on April 15, 2024, between the Sudanese Armed Force (SAF) and The Rapid Support Force (RSF), Sudan was already pushing towards what is then now considered a massive acute hunger and a nigh broad wave famine.

The conflict started in Khartoum, a city that is not only the capital but also serves as Sudan’s central political and economic developer. It witnessed a shutdown of most of its trading activities, leaving Sudanese hostages of an uncertain future of food scarcity.

The situation in Sudan is becoming increasingly dire due to ongoing conflict throughout the country. A staggering 18 million people are currently experiencing severe food shortages, with close to 5 million of them in a state of emergency hunger and mass starvation, according to the WFP.

The Jump Into the Abyss

In mid-December 2024, almost eight months into the war, the conflict spread to another city: Madani, Gezira state, Sudan’s central agricultural region. This city was a refuge for many displaced individuals and families and a hub for humanitarian aid and relief efforts. The spread of the conflict to this state added more gloominess to food insecurity and presented new obstacles to humanitarian aid reachability, making it a disaster at minimum.

This year’s Ramadan coincides with a brutal civil war and severe food insecurity. The ongoing conflict has caused displacement, violence, and limited access to essential resources. As the holy month approaches, many Sudanese are already struggling with malnourishment, and securing food to break their fasts and support their families is a challenge that we, as humanitarians, should address.
