The Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA), a humanitarian aid organization supporting hospitals and health facilities across Sudan, condemns the deadly December 4 attacks in Kologi, South Kordofan, which struck a kindergarten and a hospital, resulting in 114 deaths, including 64 children, and injuring dozens more. These attacks on civilians and health facilities are part of a pattern of violence that has already devastated Sudan’s health system and displaced thousands of people.
SAPA, and its team of field staff in South Kordofan, has acted swiftly to support Abu Jubeiha Hospital, which received and treated many of the injured. Emergency medical supplies, essential drugs, and intravenous fluids were delivered, and blankets, clothing, and personal care items were distributed to patients and their companions. SAPA teams continue to reach displaced residents in Kologi and neighboring villages through mobile clinics, delivering urgent health services where they are most needed.
Dr. Yasir Yousif Elamin, president of SAPA, released the following statement:
“The massacre in Kologi, where children in a kindergarten, and patients and medical staff in a hospital, were killed, is the latest horrifying incident in a war that has already destroyed Sudan’s health system. Attacks on medical facilities are systematic, unlawful, and unacceptable. Our teams see daily the consequences of this unrestrained violence: a country where fewer than one in four health facilities still function and where civilians have nowhere safe to go. We call for the neutrality of medical facilities and the rights of all civilians to be respected.”
For several months, SAPA has provided ongoing support to Abu Jubeiha Hospital and 20 health facilities across South Kordofan State, and operates 14 mobile clinics serving remote and underserved communities in partnership with UNICEF. The organization remains on the ground responding to the escalating humanitarian crisis, as continued attacks and displacement leave thousands without access to lifesaving care. The organization urges immediate international action to protect civilians, health workers, and facilities, and to open safe and unfettered humanitarian access.
SAPA leadership, as well as frontline healthcare workers affiliated with SAPA who are responding to the crisis inside Sudan, are available for interviews to discuss the attacks, the current humanitarian situation, and the urgent needs on the ground.
