Winter Donation Appeal to Help Families in Sudan This Season

Sudan is enduring one of the largest humanitarian catastrophes in modern history. According to recent humanitarian reports, 30.4 million people are now in need of urgent aid.

The conflict, which erupted publicly in April 2023 between armed forces and paramilitary forces, has triggered the largest and fastest displacement crisis in the world. Nearly 13 million people have been forced from their homes, many more than once. Among the displaced are millions of children, mothers, elderly and other vulnerable people, all now searching for safety, food and shelter.

Hunger, Famine and Acute Food Insecurity

Even before the war began, Sudan suffered from food insecurity. Now, the breakdown of markets, disrupted supply chains, destroyed crops and looted stores have plunged the country into famine and mass hunger.

Recent data shows that 24.6 million people are facing acute food insecurity. Alarmingly, hundreds of thousands are already in catastrophic conditions, with no certainty of where their next meal will come from.

Children, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, the elderly and the displaced, particularly, are at the highest risk.

Disease, Collapse of Healthcare, and the Cholera Outbreak

As famine and displacement ravage the country, disease is spreading aggressively. The collapse of Sudan’s fragile health infrastructure has made a dire situation almost unbearable. By 2025, as many as 80% of health facilities in conflict-affected areas are no longer functioning.

Amid this collapse, a cholera epidemic is sweeping the country. Over 100,000 suspected cholera cases have been reported, and thousands have already died. Contaminated water, lack of sanitation, overcrowded displacement camps, and destroyed infrastructure all create a deadly breeding ground for disease. For a malnourished child, a pregnant mother, or an elderly person, cholera can be instantly fatal.

What We at SAPA Are Doing And Why We Urgently Need You

Across Sudan’s war-torn towns and displacement camps, SAPA teams are working every single day to keep families alive. In places where markets have collapsed, hospitals have been destroyed, and communities have nowhere else to turn, SAPA has become a lifeline. Even in the harshest conditions, our teams continue delivering hot meals, medical care, clean water, and protection for women and children.

1. Food Support

Every morning, long before the sun rises, our community kitchens begin preparing food for families who have not had a proper meal in days. In towns like Tawila, SAPA is now serving over 5,000 hot meals daily, and across North Darfur, more than 20,000 people rely on SAPA every single day just to get enough food to survive. The meals are simple, but for a malnourished child or an exhausted mother who has walked miles to safety, they are life-saving.

2. Healthcare

With fewer than 1 in 4 health facilities still functional across Sudan, people are dying from treatable infections, dehydration, childbirth complications, and untreated injuries. This is where SAPA’s medical response is critical.

Our mobile clinics move between displacement camps and remote villages, providing treatment for infections, respiratory illnesses, injuries from conflict, and severe malnutrition. For mothers, SAPA offers maternal care packages and pregnancy follow-ups, helping women deliver safely in a country where safe childbirth has become a rarity.

Emergency medical kits are delivered to families fleeing conflict, often treating wounds or illnesses that would otherwise become fatal. In regions like Tawila, North Darfur, and Port Sudan, SAPA continues delivering essential medical supplies where hospitals are overwhelmed.

3. Clean Water, Hygiene & Cholera Prevention

To stop the outbreak, SAPA distributes water purification tablets, clean containers, and hygiene essentials that help families protect themselves. For women and girls, dignity and safety are just as critical. That’s why SAPA supports the construction of gender-sensitive latrines and bathing areas, giving them privacy and security in overcrowded camps.

FAQs

1. Why is Sudan facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises right now?

Sudan is experiencing the largest displacement crisis in the world, with over 10–12 million people forced from their homes due to ongoing conflict, destroyed infrastructure, and collapsing services.

2. How has the conflict affected children specifically?

More than 14 million children are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Many are separated from their families, malnourished, or living in overcrowded camps without food or healthcare.

3. Why is winter especially dangerous for displaced families in Sudan?

Most displaced families are living in temporary shelters, open fields, or partially destroyed buildings. As temperatures drop, malnutrition, pneumonia, and respiratory infections surge, especially among infants and the elderly.

4. What kind of aid is SAPA providing on the ground?

SAPA delivers hot meals, food baskets, medical care, maternal support, cholera-prevention supplies, clean water, and protection services in areas where systems have collapsed. SAPA operates community kitchens, mobile clinics, and WASH (water, sanitation & hygiene) programs in North Darfur and other affected regions.

5. How many people are currently facing hunger and famine in Sudan?

More than 24 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity, and hundreds of thousands are already in catastrophic famine-like conditions.

6. What caused the cholera outbreak, and how is SAPA responding?

The destruction of water systems and poor sanitation in overcrowded camps has triggered a severe cholera outbreak, with over 100,000 suspected cases. SAPA distributes water purification tablets, hygiene kits, safe water containers, and builds gender-sensitive latrines to stop the spread.

7. How does SAPA ensure aid reaches communities where big organizations cannot?

SAPA works with local teams inside Sudan, allowing rapid access to areas international agencies often cannot reach due to insecurity, blocked routes, or collapsed infrastructure. This community-led approach ensures that aid reaches families who are otherwise left behind.

8. How can I help right now?

You can make an immediate impact by donating to SAPA’s Winter Donation Appeal. Your support helps provide families with food, warmth, clean water, medical support, and protection during the cold season.
